My name is Jimmi Stevens and I am the group leader of the Spay Panama trip. I have been teaching Spanish for 23 years, eight of which have been at Community School of Naples. Beyond teaching Spanish, I sponsor the Veteran Appreciation Club and the Conservation Club. My hobbies include riding motorcycles, scuba diving, traveling and being an environmental activist.
I first learned abut the non-profit organization Spay Panama during a visit to the Pearl Islands of Panama a few years ago. I taught English in a tiny school on the island of Saboga. While there, I stayed with Lee and Jennifer Scott, Americans who own an AIRBnB. After arriving to the island seven years earlier, Jennifer had gone into the village and was horrified to see the condition of the dogs and cats. Many of them were suffering from mange and malnutrition and none of them were spayed or neutered. She declared that either she was never going to return to the village or she was going to figure out a way to help the animals. That motivation led her to find Patricia Chan with Spay Panama.
I am always looking for a meaningful service opportunity and I love cats and dogs. A conversation with a young lady who wants to become a veterinarian, gave me the idea to organize a volunteer trip to Panama city to work with Spay Panama. I am thrilled to be hosting the first CSN service-learning trip specifically for students interested in Veterinary Science.
Last summer, while in Panama on a different service-learning trip, we stopped by the Spay Panama clinic to make plans for this trip.
